This term we are looking at recycling. This is what I know so far…

We can recycle glass and cars. Remember to put the right rubbish in the right bin.

You can recycle cars and paper. And you can recycle glass and food scraps.

I know how to recycle cars. We can use paper again.

That I can reuse things and turn wood into boats.

You can recycle paper that as been used.

So the world doesn’t get dirtier.

You can recycle milk cartons.

Recycling is good for the world. You can recycle paper, glass, plastic.

Silage

We left it for half a week. We looked at it today. It looks like mould. It tastes like gas and it looks dry. When it is wet it sticks to your fingers. It looks like it is glued together. It is warm.

Silage

We are making silage. Mr Whetton gave us grass to research about silage. We put the grass in a bucket. We will make it into silage. We've been feeling and smelling it. It smelled like rotten eggs and cabbage. It looks wet and it looks yuck but it’s dry and prickly and sticky and it’s green and has leaves in it.

Group Three - Cows and Their Calves

We are looking at calves and their mothers. Our question is “How do calves know their Mum and dad?” We looked in the internet to find answers. It did not work very well. There were heaps of pictures on there. Mr Johnston brought some books. We found out some stuff about how they know their Mum. We found out that when they lick them they can taste it. Cows know the smell of their calves. We are writing information. But the books have pictures too.

Making Cheese

Yesterday we made cottage cheese. We put milk in first then we put it on the stove. Then we put some rennet in. It turned into curds and whey. We strained it through a special bag and then we put it in the fridge. Today we are going to eat it. It was fun.

Group Two - Silage Questions

We are asking questions about silage. We know it is made from grass. We emailed a farmer. The farmer was Mr Johnston's brother.

Group One - How do you make cheese

We are trying to find how to make cheese.

We have looked at books. We have been on the internet to look at cheese. Next week we are going to make cheese.

Our Inquiry

For term Three we have investigated the farm for how we get our milk. We went to Mr Cave’s farm. On the way we saw baby lambs. We saw the cows being milked and we were able to pat the calves and see the calves being feed. There was a pen of sick calves.
On the farm we saw big bulls. We went for a ride on the tractor and trailer. We saw Castlecliff beach from the farm. A cattle truck arrived with cows that were in-calf.
Mr Wingate brought his milk truck for us to look at. We got to look inside the cab of his truck and around the truck and trailer. He talked us about the milk going in and out. It goes into the truck slow and comes out fast at the factory.

We went to go to see the tanker. It had 28 wheels. The milk goes fast. We saw Castlecliff beach. We feed the calves. We got to ride on the trailer. We got to run down the hills. Then we went to the supermarket Woolworths. We were given a donut and a sausage. We saw a sheeps heart . There were rolls of stickers. Chocolate cake with sprinkles on it. We went to see the milk, butter and cheese. We had to wear hats in the butchery and the bakery.

Hangi

For our second term inquiry we looked at heat. After some discussion we decided to explore heat transfer by putting down a hangi to celebrate Matariki. The day was fantastic and we all enjoyed the tasty kai.

Our first inquiry this year looked at our school community and the people who make it function. We learnt a lot about the different jobs that the people in our school do. We also learnt about useful questions.

Our Inquiry

Welcome to Room Twelve's inquiry page.
We will be posting updates of our investigations here.
Please feel free to read and comment on what we have done and our findings.
